review: Hi! School: Love On Episode 11
He’s so in love. Another keeper of an episode. Well, all the episodes have been keepers so far but this is a good one to make you swoon. Seul Bi and Woo Hyun continue to display astounding maturity and make it clear to everyone that they only have eyes for each other. PERIOD. Kim Sae Ron looks gorgeous while Woo Hyun is hot and manly in his shorter haircut and super protective mode. I can’t get enough of them.
SY is devastated when he catches WH and SB kissing. Later, Stepmom chats with SB and finds out the young girl’s parents have “passed away”, thus, she and WH are living together. It’s understandable she’s worried that a pair of high school kids of the opposite sex are staying under the same roof. If I were their teacher, I would be too.
SB and WH stroll home and WH tries to hold her hand. HA! But SB is too quick for him and snatches her hand away. She hops onto the ledge and when she loses her balance, WH catches her and chides that it’s dangerous. SB retorts he’s more dangerous.
She slips again and he again steadies her. They share a sweet, charged moment before WH assures her he’s not dangerous, but safe. SB continues to balance on the ledge and WH casually slips his hand in hers to steady her. AWWWWWW. They both smile happily to themselves. GAAAAAAH.
Back home, WH commemorates their first kiss by marking on his calendar and with a jar of bubblegum – he thanks the bubblegum gratefully for giving him the chance to kiss her. HEH. He think of how to make more memories and his mind suddenly wanders into dangerous territory and he quickly stops himself – literally. He shoves his bed against the door to prevent himself from heading out. HAHHAHAHA. He mutters that he doesn’t trust himself too. He’s tooooo adorable and sweet. SB’s always come first.
In school, SY ignores SB to her bewilderment. During gym class, WH buddies up with SY and when SY throws the ball at him like he’s a mortal enemy, WH suspects SY’s sulking because of SB but taking out his anger on WH. WH opines that if SY likes SB, he should act appropriately. If not, he should get out of SB’s sight. SY hurls the ball over with venom and it hits WH hard. He doubles over in pain and SB quickly rushes over to his side. Upset, she eyes SY warily.
KS and SB help WH to the infirmary and Stepmom sees them and fusses over him. Anyway, why is WH’s full weight on SB and not KS?? Hahaha. When KS mentions it was SY who hit WH, she gives him an earful. But she later inquires whether SY is hurt when WH says it wasn’t SY’s fault. It was his own fault for not avoiding SY’s shot. Awwwwww. SB thinks WH is faking and shrugs him off. But he immediately pulls her towards him again and leans heavily on her, complaining that he really is hurt. They’re are sooooo cute.
Stepmom pops by the infirmary to check in on WH. But when he wakes up to find her there, she quickly apologises for SY. SY appears and she worriedly asks whether he is sick. SY mumbles he has a headache. Stepmom leaves. WH comments that Stepmom seems like a nice person: she took SY’s side and even apologised to WH in his stead.
SB is washing up when WH comes from behind and gently holds her hair to prevent it from getting wet. He opines with a grin that he thinks she won’t be able to do anything without him. GAAAAAH. Love all these little gestures that say so much. SB frets whether he has recovered. He pretends to moan in pain and starts showering her with water.
SB runs to hide behind SY and they start to have a hose fight. But SB crosses over to WH’s side after awhile, and they start to play with each other, SY all but forgotten. They dry themselves later. SB’s shirt is soaked through and SY, being a hot-blooded teenage boy, notices and continues to stare at her wet shirt, half-yearning, half curious. WH spots SY staring at SB and quickly covers her with his jacket. Boys know boys. SY is too mesmerised that he doesn’t catch WH catching him red-handed.
How much do I love WH for choosing not to embarrass SY and just comes up with an excuse when SB asks him why he is covering her with his jacket. He gently tugs her away and boy, the writer/PD are AWESOME at creating such absolutely sweet scenes. They bump into YN along the way. WH eyes her coolly, turns back to smile warmly at SB and continues to walk on. YN continues to be ostracised by the other girls. She later seeks YE out and promises to show she’s worthy of being her friend again.
Which sums up to her trying to push SB down the steps. In full view of just about everybody. This gal has a balloon for a brain. Plus, she’s a horrible actress. I’m sorry, but she is. Horrible in She’s So Lovable, too. WH and SY sees YN and WH quickly rushes to the bottom of the steps. SN pushes SB down and there is force field that slows her down so that WH is able to catch her. WH spots the supernatural intervention and recalls it is similar to what happened when SB saved his life. SY and Bully notes the bizarre event and wonders if their eyes are playing tricks on them. Anyway, it is Weirdo to the rescue. I just wished he was more subtle.
SB is jittery that so many kids witnessed the supernatural intervention and feels increasingly uncomfortable when bully keeps studying her suspiciously. WH comes into the classroom and asks her whether she is really not hurt. SB assures him she is fine and WH says he caught her this time and not SY – and it’s fate. HEH. WH notes her discomfort and notes bully’s scrutiny. And he begins to worry.
SB and WH work hard at the shop after school, with KS helping with delivery. He’s such a good friend. But JS and gang try to create havoc outside the shop. KS continues to be kind to YE’s little sis. Back to WH and the bully gang. WH strikes a bargain with them: if he wins, they’ll have to stop their nonsense. JS smirks: What happen if WH loses? What will happen to SB? WH replies with all seriousness he is putting his life on the line: no SB, no him. OMO. SB is worried that WH can’t walk the talk.
Well, he certainly can and beats them flat. WH looks as if he can really play basketball pretty good and I don’t blame SB screaming him on and going all starry-eyed. Yeah, and that would be the expression on my face too if my boy was as awesome. He’s too cool for words. Woo Hyun-Aaaaaaahhhh.
Back home, SB can’t quit worrying and WH notices. He haltingly says if the kids are suspicious…SB quickly replies she didn’t do anything wrong. WH reassures her that they are just bored. And the couple just bring on more of their amazing kinship and skinship as they playfully cup each other’s faces and tease each other. But WH is visibly still worried. DAMN. KSR and WH are totally buzzing with swoony awareness.
SY is having nightmare fantasies of SB and WH being all lovey-dovey at home and decides to pack up and stay with them. Stepmom guesses he likes SB. SY doesn’t refute her and instead polishes off the tonic she offers him and tells her to keep making side dishes because WH really likes her stuff. Stepmom is happy that SY is opening up to her.
WH can’t believe SY plans to stay with them and voices out SY is here to keep an eye on he and SB. Heh. SB shoves them together and tells them to have a good time bonding. SY heads to the bathroom and sees the couple’s toothbrushes together in a mug. He throws out WH’s and places his beside SB’s. Hehehehe.
SB heads out with SY to run some errands while YN drops by the shop to see WH. Well, she insists on back-hugging him. SB and SY return in time to see them in that position. SY covers the door and orders not to look anywhere – and just look at him. He takes her away but WH spots them and gives chase. YN threatens to kill herself if he leaves and WH snaps that she can do what she wants. He goes out searching for SB.
SY takes SB somewhere. He states what they saw was probably a misunderstanding. SB re-affirms it is a misunderstanding. She has seen it all in dramas: how misunderstandings end up causing hurt. Thus, she’s not going to be sucked into doing that. She runs off and SY sighs: does she trust WH that much? Is there really no space for him in her heart?
Back at home, WH tries to reason with SB that nothing happened. Plus, didn’t they agree to trust each other no matter what happens? SB grumbles she didn’t agree to that. WH comments that she looks as if she doesn’t trust him. When she claims otherwise, WH then demands to know why her expression is still so dour. SB admits she still feels awful seeing him and YN like that and stomps off. Heh. She’s cutttteeeee. WH grins and figures that she’s jealous.
He later goes to the bathroom and notices the toothbrush swap. He mutters that SY is being childish but he’ll overlook it this time. He wonders whether SY still intends on wooing SY. So WH being WH, asks SY outright whether he is chasing SB. And it strikes him that SY might have confessed his love to SB.
SY doesn’t deny it and WH growls why it has to be SB among all the good gals out there? SY replies it’s because he likes SB. When WH rails that SY is really acting all weird, SY retorts that WH should give SB up. WH states firmly he is never ever doing that and suggests SY give up instead. SY suggests they fight it out till the end. WH reasons that SY still has his parents, while he has no one else but SB. SY learns that the necklace was given to WH by his mom.
Unable to sleep, SY goes to the living room. SB is there and she shares with conviction that though it is said that human love can change, she isn’t going to do that. So she tells SY not to wait for her. He’s a really good friend to both WH and her. SY answers sadly that he just found out that the word “friend” has the ability to inflict pain.
Stepmom submits her resignation to the wrath of the gym teacher. She has a talk with SY and he requests to transfer schools. Stepmom knows he’s doing this because of SB. The bullies made the new victim dance – and the old victim joins him. WH walks in and snorts at their dancing and bursts out his idol moves. Hahahahaha. Soon, everyone is dancing and JS is livid that his bullying became a dance party.
Bullies wonder where WH got his moves from and muses that there is something really strange going on with SB. JS says they’ll just have to find out what it is. SB gets a text message from Weirdo to meet him and she takes off. The bullies trail her.
Weirdo shares with SB the rules of angels-turned-humans and they all have a mark on them. He hands a envelope and stamps the mark on her. Bullies think he’s giving her money and their imagination starts to run wild. SY decides to go home, to WH’s delight. Bullies catch SB and Weirdo outside the café and demands to know their relationship. WH comes along and recognises Weirdo. Later, he tells SB he knows Weirdo is a good guy and it’s good to have good people around her. SB guesses that WH knows about her being an angel. WH says in voiceover that he is afraid she’ll just disappear one day in a burst of light and thus he’ll pretend not to know anything.
SY finds stumbles across Stepmom’s necklace and puts the pieces together. He dashes to WH’s place. Meanwhile, SB reads the note Weirdo had passed to her. If a suspicious human touches the mark on her wrist, she’ll disappear forever from all worlds. And the humans she has interacted with will lose their memories of her . YIKES. That means she will truly vanish – neither human nor angel. SB is horrified at the thought that WH won’t be able to recall her at all. NOOOOOOOOO. Please drama…don’t go there… I neeed my happy ending for these two.
Anyway, SY arrives but WH is showering. He heads up to WH’s room and fits both necklaces together. It’s a match. WH walks in and SY rages at him not to come near.
So SB finally admits she loves WH. To SY, at least. It’s a love beyond romantic love – he’s all she has in this world, he’s everything to her. He’s family to her, too. And it’s the same for WH. He is dead serious whenever he says he only has SB and no one else and without her, he is nothing. SB’s letter reads that the humans’ memories will be wiped out if she disappears. Which brings me to the very first episode when they show WH two years in the future, still looking, still waiting for SB. He obviously still recalls her so there must be a twist somehow. Maybe if the human somehow doesn’t forget about the angel’s existence, the angel is able to find its way back to earth.
He must have wanted to die when she left so there is has to be a reason why he is still hanging on. He probably would have reunite with his real mom by then but I don’t really think that suffices. I have a feeling there is a loophole to the whole she’ll-disappear-forever angle. And SB will keep trying to return to WH until she finally does. Very much like Eun Soo in Faith.
Anyway, WH is just awesome in this episode. I don’t think I can love him more. The way he handled SY was pure class and showed what a lovely, understanding, astute person he is. Even when he caught SY staring at SB in a not-so-innocent way, he sized up the situation, briskly cover SB up and led her away instead of creating a fuss and embarrassing SY. He doesn’t want to ruin the friendship between the three of them.
The most beautiful part of this drama is how dead-sure and unwavering SB and WH are about each other. And how they always put the other party first, no matter the situation. I don’t think WH physically desires SB any less than SY, but respecting SB and protecting SB always comes first for him, no arguments needed. I mean this is the first time I’m seeing a guy block his room door with his bed to stop himself from hunting his gal down because he doesn’t trust himself to exercise self-control. If that’s not love, I don’t know what that is.
SB rejecting SY outright had to be done and she did it for his own good. She knows there is no one else but WH for her. And she chose to trust WH infinitely with the SN nonsense and not make an issue out of it. I just love the relationship between SB and WH – they are independent yet mutually dependable. They are playful but are amazingly mature when it comes to matters of the heart. They love each other selflessly, unconditionally. There’s something indescribably moving and soul-searing about their bond. It’s built on simple principles but yet so powerful. Just the action of WH holding back SB’s hair so that she can wash her face properly tugs at my heartstrings. It’s all about being there for each other, in both big and small ways.
And gosh, the seamless, unaffected skinship. The charged moments. The wonderful conversations they have with each other. The loving looks. THE CHEMISTRY between WH and KSR. The whole drama works because of the consistent writing, thoughtful character development and the sizzling OTP chemistry. WH and KSR have established such a solid rapport that their scenes together need no effort to shine and reel in viewers. Really Daebak.
Thank you so much! Yes it was Great! I loved this ep!
woooo! loving them so much, they’re just the cutest ❤
Thanks for the review:)
In this episode, Nam Woohyun really appears a lot in Shin Woohyun… All the endless worrying of course. It shows pretty much how caring Namu is in real life and how he goes on and on to think about others around him.
And I love how he starts singing an Infinite song (Last romeo) in the shower ^^
Give him an Ost to sinf please jebal I love his voice *o*
I just watched on Viki with just 72% subtitles so I need to watch again tomorrow to understand everything but your review just made me cry. I just want to thank you for this amazing review!
WH and SB are so great together and I’m just so in love with them it’s just ridiculous 🙂 Their relationship just keeps getting better and better.
This show! I can’t. I hate that it’s only once a week. I love WH and SB so damn much. I think I mutter “poor Sungyeol” about 4X an episode though. He’s adorable and I feel bad for him.
WH’s mother is the worst, she sees her son literally suffering by himself (except for SB) and does nothing. She’ll have to do a whole lot in the next 10 episodes for me to grudgingly like her. Also hate most of the students as well,
I’m preparing myself for the anxiety of the future episodes with all the not-remembering part….that is soooo not acceptable.AT ALL.please drama gods…I’ll never beg and want or ask much of you …but please don’t erase HyunBi memories….My heart is breaking just thinking about it.
And it so helps that you happen you happen to be the FAITHified blogger. “Very much like Eun Soo in Faith”…..I must say it to some extent this line made me feel at ease for the time being.A big bucketful of hugs for you.
Watched this episode 6 times in a single day (no subs, 11,45,72,91(twice) pct of subs). I am gonna go down with this ship.. Aren’t I? I mean most other shows ,I skim through the episodes ..look at me now. Sigh.
I loved your recap and had a huge smile plastered on my face as I read it. I could feel my love for WH and LSB reflected in your words. There aren’t too many drama couples that I have shipped so much onscreen as these two. They are so sweet and adorable on one hand – two normal youngsters in first flush of love. On the other hand, there is nothing normal about them – one is a guy who has no one in the world to love but her while the other is a girl who gave up eternity to be with him.
Their story is far more complex than what meets the eye, there in lies their biggest triumph.
Woo Hyun this episode (and all previous ones too but this one especially ) showed how magnanimous he is (in spite of petty jealousy, he doesn’t want to lose SY as a friend – so he perseveres on, ignoring the fact that SY confessed, he tried to hurt him or was staring at LSB). There is an inherent goodness in WH which is what attracted an angel like Seul Bi to him (or so I think). Another thing is how lonely he is, he doesn’t want to lose the few people he has by his side – be it LSB or SY. Major point is of course his strong conviction of his feelings for LSB- there is nothing teenage about his feelings even when he is being cheesy or goofing around – there is a thread of worry about her identity, there is maturity and understanding, also an ability to tell off those he is not interested in. Loved how he shook off ye na, told her in no uncertain terms that there would be no feelings from his side no matter what – but also avoided falling into her trap of blackmail telling her off strongly – I don’t care what you do but don’t waste your life on me. (How many dramas have I been annoyed by the male leads’ inability to simply tell off the second lead girl who would then spin a tale of misunderstanding?! Sends kisses to WH for his attitude)
Then WH’s ability to take control of a situation – the way he danced his way out of a bully situation to make it a fun situation or the way he played basketball to save his life(ie LSB) or how he quickly grasped the president angel situation and saved the day. Daebek!
The boy is sensitive kind loving caring and understanding besides being street smart and positive in life. Why would anybody not want him is my question!!
Now comes LSB, she never ceases to amaze me. Her love for WH is so focussed, so dedicated that she really doesn’t see anything beyond him. SY who she likes so much does not come anywhere close to her heart. I love that about her. I generally have a problem with dillydallying heroines who would play with both the guys infinitely until you want to personally get other girls for the unsuspecting guys. Here, she is clear – human love may change but I don’t think I will ever stop loving WH. I am sorry SY, I value you as a friend. As painful as it is – nothing is better than a straightforward rejection instead of false hopes and huge heartbreaks. How many ways do I love LSB that she watches her k dramas carefully? Misunderstanding – it’s a misunderstanding and no I don’t want to go that way, she says. Her implicit trust in WH and the adorable discussion where she shows jealousy much to WH’s amusement !! Love!!
WH and SY are like a much married couple many times – they have fun then they have serious discussions, they understand and trust each other, where does SY stand in this? Nothing more than a friend of the couple.
Truthfully, SY is a nice guy yes- but he is just different. He is more normal – his worries are more grounded in things that most teenagers can identify with . Parent issues, unrequited love, best friend’s girl. All his reactions are equally normal and hence very understandable but what he is trying is impossible – making a place in LSB’s heart. Sorry sung yeola she is not your average girl. She made huge sacrifices for WH, she isn’t about to leave him for you or anything in this world or next.
I still dislike the mom deeply, her selfishness knows no bounds. How did she give birth to the incredibly awesome WH all credit for WH’s upbringing goes to ms Gong.
The other characters are shaping up interestingly . The two side kicks have more interesting roles than jae suk suddenly. YE seems to have big secrets and a cute sister. YN is still dumb, murderous and not about to correct her ways. Gi Su though is such a fine friend. Always there for WH and SLB ( so glad the show didn’t decide to ditch him just to highlight SY as a friend in need). Their home room teacher is a riot. Lol. Lovely epi, it’s worrying that this show hasn’t disappointed yet but I hope it continues to be as awesome. Great going show!
Thank you for your review and as usual it’s spot on, you picked what we felt inside and described them with spot on accuracy.
Yes, yes, yes and yes. I agree with you. All of it.
WH and SB are great in this ep. Never thought it can be deeper than it is but i swear its going deeper and deeper with each ep. I mean in love with WH. He’s just perfect. Ms breathless, you described their love beautifully thus no need to say more.
When SY stared at wet SB and WH calmly covers her, i think WH first thought would be to protect SB, to prevent her from knowing what SY was thinking at that time and to prevent her friendship with SY becoming more awkward than it is. To protect her views of SY as a good friend. A move that accomplish many deeds including no embarassment occurred, SY and SB. Nicely done by WH.
Do you think SB purposely stay away from WH for a year until she completely turn into human? Only after that she will return to him? The memory loss, is it her memories or people around her that won’t remember her?
I love this drama so much!!
I am so glad the pd/writers are being more bold in recent episodes. I thought that because of her age we would see almost no skinship or anything at all.
Let me just say that I’m in love with SWH. And it’s so weird because I started watching this because I’m a fan of NWH but I never felt this way towards him. But there’s something about this character that it’s so charming. I love how full of life he is. He has no parents, he just lost the most importante person in his life but for some reason he’s not pitiful.
SY on the other hand…poor him. I just can’t watch some of his scenes with SB because I feel so sorry for him it’s painful.
SB gets prettier everytime I look at her! She looked so young in the first episodes but look at her now. And she is such a great actress.
I said last week that ep. 10 was my fave I was wrong. This one is my favorite!
I was skeptic about how the writers would move the story forward and BINGO! …the plot twist! I’m all inquisitive about this new challenge that SB is put up through! As the show progresses it makes me realize how pristine WH/SB love is.From the infinitesimal things they do(WH holding back SB’s hair) to the ginormous things they say (WH saying ‘without SB is life is meaningless/SB trusting WH through all circumstances) for each other summarizes it all.I died a little inside when SY thought WH as his nemesis! But I’m happy to see how each main character is portraying his/her emotions without affecting their fidelity to friendship.I congratulate the directors for not ignoring side characters like SE/JS and his friends/SN/CH/Ramen girl etc and giving them their own storyline integrated into the main part. This ep relayed a deeper context in a humorous way.ah! My favourite list of HSLO episodes is growing!
LOL I came back to check if you’ve changed the header to the cute WH-SLB scene and lo.. There it is 🙂
Hahahaha. Yes – I’m that predictable. 😉
SB – she looked so lovely with her hair down, I think KSR the actress is blossoming day by day as I can the difference in her now compared to 3 eps ago, she is becoming more womanly right before our eyes.
WH – oh my, what a perfect boyfriend he is. Love this protective side of him and his all swoon worthy lines, ‘without SB, I am nothing’, aww….kill me right here. What is it that this WH can’t do? He rides, cooks, dances, plays basketball, sings….. SY, sorry, SB loves him not only for all that, WH has a a great personality too. Have to say, WH looked so Hot and manly, it was so difficult to follow the subtitles while watching coz my mind kept saying ‘wow, he looked so so’s good and SB looked so so pretty’
SY – poor guy, his crush likes WH and his step mom’s biological son is WH too, he must be feeling really lousy and thinking ‘I can’t win over WH’. He likes WH as a friend and I am curious to know if he has another reason for being unhappy with his stepmom other than WH has SB. Could it be he has started to feel more comfortable with the stepmom esp now his own mum has remarried and he doesn’t want to share his stepmom ‘s affection?
Alright, I am going to start fangirling here, isn’t WH’s dance step and basketball moves swoonworthy? This is one Daebak ep. Thanks for this awesome post.
Yup, she’s definitely becoming more womanly. I think it’s the result of acting with older guys. WH’s new haircut is killing me… I love it!! It makes him look cooler and more manly.
I jusr saw this ep. And im loving the characters more..i absolutely love SBs hair now. I cant imagine she’s only 14. WH on the other hand, how can we not love such sweet, caring and protective guy who openly confess his admiration to the girl he loves. Poor sung yeol he must have felt betrayed by his stepmom and rejected by SB. Apart from WH an SB otp. I got another ship too..the hotdog girl and the tall bully. Never thought their tandem will be violenly cute..
So much love for this OTP and drama – amazing!! I’m so sad we have passed the halfway mark! I’m going to suffer from MAJOR withdrawal symptoms after….
