review: High School: Love On Episode 13

It’s a rather amazing love that Woo Hyun and Seul Bi have. They’re actually not really romantic or mushy… they are mostly practical and fuss-free. But what makes them breath-taking is their rock-solid belief and trust in each other, and how the other person ALWAYS comes first. It’s the selfless simplicity in the way they go about doing things that makes their love so cherished and all sorts of swoony. And of course, WH and KSR are displaying the kind of exquisite chemistry that you wished every drama OTP possesses. There’s an honest, warm intimacy between them that just makes you wanna melt over and over and over…

Stepmom finally blurts out she is WH’s mom – which is kinda awkward and bewildering any way you slice it. WH disses her and goes on to chat to Grandma, tears rolling down his cheeks. SB watches him worriedly and slips her fingers through his. Awwwwwwww. Love her silent show of support and the way she stares at him. Actually, I’ve been loving the way she stares at him for the past two episodes like she is really falling deeper and deeper in love with him with each second.

As they walk away, WH makes a show of appearing unaffected but SB can tell the poor boy is in a lot of pain. Awwwwww…and she’s looking at him THAT way again. KSR – zzang! And gotta love WH’s wardrobe – he looks sooooo hot in all those sweaters. WH figures out SY already knows about the mom issue and thus his recent bizarre behaviour. He calls the other boy out and states he has no intension of reuniting with his mom. Back home, he throws away his necklace.

The next day, SB continues to watch WH like a hawk – or a fretful mother hen. Finally, she runs up to him and holds out her hand: whether he is having a difficult time or going to fall, she’ll catch him. AWWWWWWWWW. WH says if he is going to fall, he isn’t going to bring her down with him. SB argues that falling together has its benefits: it is less embarrassing and less injury to be suffered. WH stops and announces he won’t fall because his SB definitely can’t get injured. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. These two are killlllllinnnng me. Later, WH warns SY that he isn’t going to let him hurt SB in any way.

SY, YN, WH and SB get stuck together later on and I was chuckling at how WH chased YN away in a not-so-subtle manner. WH fools around with SB and when he orders her to beg him cutely to return the book…she does it twice super duper adorably and the poor boy’s heart can’t take it. He harshly instructs her not to pull this tactic on anyone else. HEHEHEHEHEHEHE. I bet even the biggest bullies will melt. WH is cleaning up when he sees SY from the window, brooding. He blows a mist over his image and sighs that he doesn’t want to capture the sight of SY having a painful time. WH is such a softie at heart. Which is why SB and WE love him so much.

SB finds the tossed necklace and knows that her baby boy is hurting. She seeks out SY and begs him to stop mistreating WY, which just gets SY madder since all SB cares about is WH. SY reinstates he’ll take away everything that is WH’s. YN decides to hold her birthday party at WH’s shop. Stepmom visits WH At the shop and offers him the money that she has been sending to Grandma every month. WH turns her down and she brings up the topic of he and SB living together, he shoves the money back and tells her coolly to quit any interest she has in SB. FIERCE. WH implores Stepmom to be just SY’s mom and nothing else. SB overhears them.

JS sees Stepmom outside the shop crying and his curiosity is piqued. SB’s heart is breaking for WH but she smartly decides not to go all sympathetic on him. WH tries to gather his composure and pretends nothing is amiss when SB comes over. She ties an apron around him – in the exact same way he tied hers. Hehehe. That somehow comforts him and he cracks a tiny smile. SB cheerfully reminds him that Grandma said to think of the person eating the food you are making. Thus, the people eating what WH makes will be all sad if he makes the food in his current state. He smiles and SB compliments him that he is the most handsome when he smiles.

As SB chops stuff, WH sees her wrist glowing and hastily rolls the sleeves of her shirt down to cover it, saying her wrists are the prettiest and cannot be shown. SB instantly knows what he is trying to do and is touched. Awwwwww….. their wordless exchange….omo….they don’t need words to express themselves to each other. They just know. WH is non too pleased when he finds out the person who booked out his shop is YN, but SB and KS persuades him to just go along as planned.

YN sees WH and SB acting all lovey-dovey while cooking deokbokki and is royally pissed. Me? I just adore how the chemistry is evident between WH and KSR even though we are only getting WH’s back view and KSR’s profile. YN pretends she needs to use the washroom and heads up to the apartment. There, she sees the evidence of the simple joy the couple share in their daily lives. It’s a gently stirring scene: their shoes, their books out in the yard, their stacked clothes side by side, and those darned toothbrushes. WH and SB are not merely just living under the same roof – they are living life together in the ways that count.

SB is delirious at the amount of money they made from YN and WH snipes that SB is placing higher importance on money rather than her boyfriend. HEH. SB muses that money is important to humans so she is all for having a boyfriend who makes money. Hehehe. WH acknowledges she is pretty smart. Ha. WH doesn’t want to deal with SN and SB puts the blame on his immense popularity. HEH. She cites that liking someone is not a bad thing. WH states that is one thing in the world that even if give it your all, it doesn’t mean you will receive back in kind – that is the heart. Sweet. WH gets a call and leaves immediately. It is SY’s dad, trying his best to patch things up between the boys. Awwww…such a sweet dad. But well, it doesn’t work out. WH admits he has found his mother but things aren’t working out. He stands up to leave, saying he doesn’t like leaving SB alone by herself. Aiiiisssh.

Well, SB is waiting for him, worrying that it is getting late and he isn’t home. WH broods in the park, watching families hang out together. He finds SB nodding off on the stairs, earphones plugged in. He sits beside her and puts her head on his shoulder. Awwwww. He plucks out one earphone and smiles when he realises she’s listening to his lullaby. OMO. The song is so beautiful and fits their cosy, intimate moment perfectly.

SB wakes up and snuggles back on his shoulder again. Awwwwwww. So comfy with each other. WH muses on the definition of family and SB replies that a person who is family will always take her side. WH sighs that he doesn’t have family then since Grandma is gone. SB insists that he has her and WH retorts they aren’t family…at least not yet. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.

SB doesn’t really get the point and argues that she is forever on his side so why can’t she be considered family? WH says if they become family now, they’ll never can a real family later. Anyway, WH goes to make her promise that she must agree to be on his side later. And forever. GAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH. They swear on it and he pats his shoulder. She smiles happily and snuggles into his shoulder again. WH smiles contentedly. OMO. They are sooooooooooo wonderful it hurts.

SB leaves all this post-its with sayings on them and when she claims she spent the whole night writing them…Wh cuts in and says she borrowed the phrases from dramas. Hahaha. They leave for school and the rumour mill is at full force again that SB and WH are cohabitating – as a couple, not cousins. JS does his usual insulting routine which pisses WH off. SB tries to interfere but WH quickly stops her, wrapping her arm protectively behind his back. The teachers call for a meeting to decide what to do and Weirdo saves the day by cooking up this rather far-fetched theory of acknowledging the kids’ pure love. It satisfies the teachers…for now.

SY makes veiled remarks during Stepmom’s class and later, the boys have it out on the rooftop. SB quickly follows WH, and Stepmom follows suit. Anyway, SY suddenly loses his brain and climbs up the edge of the building, wondering who Stepmom will choose. Sunbae suddenly appears to cause a commotion and SB tries to stop him using her powers. Her wrist starts to glow and SY sees it. WH sees it too and quickly rushes towards her. Stepmom takes the chance to knock the distracted SY off the ledge to safety. WH grabs the traumatised, frantic SB in a super gentle but protective embrace and hugs her tightly saying: “It’s safe now.” She takes heaving breaths and he gathers her closer. DYINNNNNGGGGG

I posted why SB and WH rocks, and and why WH and KSR rocks big time in my earlier post. Their relationship is developed so solidly and organically that it feels believable and real – two kids who really end up falling in love through circumstances that brought them together. The innocence, naivety, freshness and zest are retained, but bracketed with an deep-seated mutual care that just makes their feelings for each other so utterly, utterly sweet and moving.
